 Do You Truly Believe?

But meanwhile Peter continued knocking, and when they opened the gate and saw him, they were amazed.- Acts 12:16 (NKJV)
‘Amazed’, ‘astonished’ ‘shocked’ are the words different bible versions use to describe the reactions of the large number of believers who were assembled together and were praying at Mary the mother of John Mark’s house when they saw Peter. Surely Peter’s release must have been part of their prayers, so why did they first struggle to believe Rhoda when she informed them that he was at the gate and when they saw him, why were they so surprised? Could it be that they were simply going through the motions when they prayed? Did they doubt that God could…..
Recently I needed financial help and I prayed that God would touch someone’s heart to meet my need, I then decided to talk to a few persons about it, for the first person I considered, I discovered she was dealing with her daughter’s illness, the other had invested in a business venture and needed cash too and the last person had just given out some money to someone else. With no help in sight, I was dejected, I wasn’t going to ask anyone asides those I had considered. So I gave up even though I had prayed. Then a few days later, out of the blue, without even asking this particular individual, I received a text on my phone from my bank that my account had been credited. Yes, I was amazed, astonished and shocked, because I didn’t really believe that it would happen just because it seemed impossible. The truth was my prayers lacked faith. I went through the motions of praying but did I really believe i would receive my heart desires?
Jesus says to us “Ask and Ye shall receive”.. James says, “Ask in faith without doubting”, in Hebrews we are told “Our faith assures us of things we expect and convinces us of the existence of things we cannot see”.. If the faith of the believers was at work, as soon as Rhoda informed them of Peter’s presence, without even seeing him they would have believed and rejoiced immediately. If my faith was at work, I would have held on to the truth of God’s word, that all my needs would be met even if it didn’t look like that initially.
God desires to meet our needs, He also gave us prayer as a means to communicate our desires to Him but ever so often we shortchange ourselves when we keep going through the motions of prayers without faith, without expectations.. With God there is no impossibility, He is able to do much more than we can ever ask or think of if only we believe.
Mark 9:24; Immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief! (NKJV)
.Lord, strengthen my faith
.Lord, help me overcome unbelief
Ponder on this
When in doubt, we can ask God for more faith, this truth is the same for all believers, that our faith is far from perfect.
God will continue to enable you to live a life that pleases Him in Jesus name.
